Missing or incorrect colors due to bad display unit.
Cause:
The display unit (monitor) is bad.
Solution:
Replace the display unit. Ensure the display unit and video adapter card match. Disconnect data and power cables. Switch display units and reconnect cables. Turn on the display unit and computer and check for proper operation.
NOTE: The display unit and video adapter card (installed inside the computer) MUST match in type (EGA, VGA, SVGA) and resolution (640 by 480). If you upgrade the display unit, the video card should be upgraded also. If you are installing both, the video adapter card should be installed first.
1) Ensure new display unit matches the video adapter card's capabilities:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Settings' and select 'Control Panel'. (The 'Control Panel' window appears.)
c) Double-click the 'Display' icon. (The 'Display Properties' dialog box appears.)

2) If necessary, run a hardware utility (like Microsoft Diagnostics (MSD)) to determine the type of current video adapter card. To run Microsoft Diagnostics:
a) Enter MSD at DOS prompt (brings up MSD main screen).
b) Press 'V' or click 'Video...' (third button on left side) to display Video information on video adapter card and display unit.
c) Check the documentation that accompanied the new display to determine if it will work properly with the existing video adapter card.
3) Save work files, exit all applications and turn the computer off.
4) (Optional) If also installing video adapter card, install it first.
5) Unplug display unit's power cable from the surge protector or wall socket.
6) Use a small flat-tip screwdriver to loosen the screws holding the video data cable onto connector on the back of the computer.
TIP: Trace video data cable from back of display unit to the back of the computer.
7) Note orientation of plug to socket. Grasp the video cable plug and pull it straight out of the socket.
CAUTION: Forcing it could damage the connector pins or socket; ensure screws are completely loosened.
8) Move the old display unit from the desk.
9) Carefully unpack new display unit and remove all packing materials.
10) If display unit base is detached, position display unit upside down on desk or sturdy surface and install the display base (following accompanying assembly instructions).
11) Set the new display unit right-side up near the computer (ensure the cables will reach).
12) Connect the data cable to the video card socket on back of the computer.
a) Locate same 15-pin socket where the old video cable was removed.
b) Orient the plug so that it matches the socket (similar to the way the old one was removed in Step 6 above.)
c) Insert the plug into the video card socket until it is firmly seated.
NOTE: DO NOT force it. If the plug does not fit, check the plug orientation (it fits only one way) and ensure the correct socket is being used.)
d) Tighten the securing screws using a small flat-tip screwdriver.
e) If video cable is not permanently attached to display unit, attach it, repeating steps 11)a) to 11)d).
13) Plug the display unit power cable into both the display unit and the surge protector or wall outlet.
14) Position the display unit where desired (leave plenty of slack in cables for minor adjustments).
15) Turn on the display unit.
NOTE: Ensure the operation light on display unit comes on. If the light does not come on, check the power cable connections.
16) Turn on the computer.
17) Watch the display unit for familiar information during bootup.
18) If display unit is on and nothing appears on the display, perhaps video cable is not connected securely; check it.
19) Adjust the video controls (contrast, brightness, positioning) to desired levels (consult owner manual for location and instructions).
